OAFCCD - Empowering Communities

 

These videos demonstrate how parent engagement supports student success. Speech-Language Pathologists talk about how they work with parents and the things parents can do to support their child’s success. Parents share stories about their journeys and provide tips on how to work effectively with Speech-Language Pathologists and Teachers.

These videos also feature the stories of three students, Quin, Stephanie and Croft, and show how parent engagement supports student achievement.

Understanding Speech Language

 Understanding speech and language, definition of disorders or delays of speech and language including articulation, stuttering, voice, receptive language, and expressive language. 

Trust Your Instincts

 If you believe your child has an issue, get it assessed early. Early detection of speech and language delays is important. 

Parent Role in Speech Language Services

 Parents provide important information on their child’s development. Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) provide strategies to use at home to help stimulate speech and language development. 

Parent Role in Transitioning to School

 The process of transition between preschool services and school services is discussed. Parents are the constant in the child’s life and need to be aware of who is involved and what services are required. 

Quin's Story

 Quin and his mother discuss his experience in speech therapy from kindergarten through grade 8. Quin has Apraxia of Speech. 

Parent Role at School

 Parents, teachers, and Speech- Language Pathologists (SLP) need to be in contact about the child’s skills and needs. The programs at different school boards are discussed. 

IEPs and IPRCs Explained

 Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Identification, Placement, and Review Committee (IPRC)
IEP and IPRCs are defined and the purposes explained. 

Stephanie's Story

 Stephanie has a language delay/ disorder. Stephanie and her mother discuss her experiences in school. She currently is in high school and has great support from her parents and teachers. 

Parent Role in High School

 Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) services are discussed, including the other professionals involved. The parents’ engagement is high in grade 9 and 10. Starting in grade 11, the student becomes their own advocates. 

Special Education Advisory Council

 

The role and components of SEACs are discussed.

 

Croft's Story

 Croft is a college student who is dysfluent. Croft and his mother outline Croft’s therapy history and some helpful suggestions.

Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) present a summary of services and what parents can do.
